Success for Perse debating team
On Wednesday evening, two teams of Year 10 pupils headed to St Mary’s School to compete in the regional heat of the ESU Churchill Public Speaking Competition.
Team 1 comprised Annabel Follows (Chairperson), Ursula Aitchison (Speaker) and Sarah Dawoodbhoy (Questioner). Ursula gave a well-constructed speech on the topic, ‘Freedom of speech must be an unrestricted right in a true democracy’, skilfully referencing recent events in Paris. Team 2 consisted of Tom Seekings (Chairperson), Bella Brazg Carrell (Speaker) and Charity Pickup (Questioner). Bella spoke movingly on the topic, ‘The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath’.
The Perse teams were commended for all being Year 10 students taking part in a competition where most of the other entrants were in Year 11. In addition, the students performed excellently, in what was all of their first debating competition. Of the six teams competing, Perse Team 2 were delighted to have been proclaimed runners-up and will now proceed to the Regional Finals at Oakham Castle on 11 February. Special mention also goes to Charity Pickup for being awarded the title of ‘Best Questioner’ and was given special praise by the judges.
