U16 boys’ indoor hockey team makes national finals
9 Dec 2014
The Perse continued its successful winter of Indoor Hockey with the U16 boys’ team winning the East Championships at Bedford School. They will now compete at the EHB National Schools Indoor Finals in January, joining our U16 girls and U18 boys. This is the first time that The Perse has three teams progressing to the National Finals and all three teams are hoping to make a big impact.
Representing Cambridgeshire, the U16 boys played the other county winners across the region. Starting with an exciting 5-5 draw with Norwich School, the team then beat Watford Grammar 4-0, Bedford School 5-0 and Ipswich 6-3 to secure the East title.
By winning the title without losing a game, the boys managed to achieve a remarkable feat; this squad of players has not lost a single game indoor or outdoor throughout the calendar year 2014. They now hope to continue that run into the 2015 campaign, starting at January’s National Finals.
Captain Zaman Akhter was the top goal scorer, amassing 13 of the teams 20 goals during the day. Vice-captain and goalkeeper Ben Brown was in inspired form too, making several crucial saves that gave The Perse team the momentum to go on to their win against Ipswich.
Richard Morgan, the team’s coach said: “There is a fantastic mentality within this squad. They know what they want to achieve and it is extremely pleasing to see such a dedicated and talented group of players rewarded for the hours that have been spent in preparing for this campaign. They will be doing all they can to ensure they are one of the sides to beat when they play at the National stage of this competition.”
We wish all three Perse teams the very best of luck as they play against the country’s top teams in January.
