Perse pupils are ‘Top of the Bench’
On 14 November, the Chemistry Department played host to the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Top of the Bench Competition. Top of the Bench is a national competition designed for 14-16 year-olds to put their chemistry skills and knowledge to the test across a series of challenges.
This year the competition had a World War I theme. In experiment 1, students were asked to “Create a Silent Timer” to time precisely 100 seconds using the clock reaction. In experiment 2, students played the role of an analyst and had to identify “What killed General Selenium?” The day was rounded off with a themed chemistry/history quiz and the chance to practice their evacuation strategy when the fire alarm decided to interrupt proceedings!
This year we had a record number of participating schools from across the Mid-Anglia Region. Eighty students and 20 staff attended the event and much fun was had by all. After a gruelling afternoon the Perse Team A comprising Max Deane and Alex Niemczuk in Year 9, Munveer Virdee in Year 10 and Pratap Singh in Year 11 emerged victorious with a fantastic final score of 72 points out of 88.
The team will go on to compete in the national final in April 2015 and we wish them the best of luck.
