Behind the scenes with theatrical engineering
24 Nov 2014
Last week, students at The Perse were given the opportunity to attend a talk on engineering in the theatre at the Institute of Manufacturing in Cambridge.
Three engineers from Delstar Engineering shared their expertise on designing and building specialist equipment for theatrical performances. Delstar have worked on a number of renowned West End productions including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Wizard of Oz and Oliver!.
The students particularly enjoyed hearing about the challenges engineers face in their work in the world of theatre, such as space constraints. Having worked in the West End, students were particularly interested to hear about their work on Miss Saigon, where they built the iconic helicopter especially for the show.
This fascinating insight into the ‘behind the scenes’ work of engineers will have no doubt inspired our students to consider such a career path in the future.
