Small Ships Race 2014
9 Oct 2014
On Friday 30 students and four staff headed down to Haslar Marina in Gosport to board ‘Pegasus’, ‘Annabel J’, ‘Moosk’ and ‘Maybe’ before sailing across to Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
Some students had done a fair bit of sailing before, for some it was the first time they had set foot on a boat, but all were able to throw themselves into life aboard a tall ship and take an active part in crewing the boats.
After only a few hours of practice, the four boats set off on Saturday morning just as a cold front came through for the main event of the weekend – the 11th ASTO Small Ships Race. Despite the driving rain and, at times, strong wind, the crews did incredibly well and as the clouds lifted towards the end of the race and the sun broke through, all four Perse boats crossed the finish line to finish in the top five – a fantastic achievement.
The crews were then able to celebrate their success in the prize-giving ceremony in the evening, with the crew of Pegasus also picking up the prize for youngest overall crew. The sun then continued to shine for a leisurely sail back to Gosport on Sunday with the hope that next year will see more success.
