Students inspired by John Milton with trip to Christ’s College
Our Upper Sixth English students enjoyed a fascinating morning at the Old Library Christ’s College where the librarian Amelie Roper introduced them to some first editions of Milton’s Paradise Lost and other rare exhibits from their John Milton collection. The chance to compare different print editions from the seventeenth century and to analyse the changing political and cultural contexts of the poem was a real insight into the work they are studying for their A2 English Literature examination. Students also had the opportunity to also read and handled Darwin’s copy of Paradise Lost which he read during his voyage on The Beagle.
The visit finished with a walk to Milton’s mulberry tree in the college gardens, where the poet sat and read whilst a student at Christ’s – inspiration indeed!
