The Perse hosts English-Speaking Union public speaking competition
Last night, the Perse hosted the prestigious English-Speaking Union public speaking competition. We welcomed five schools from across the region, along with members of the English-Speaking Union and the competition judges.
The competition has been running since 1960, and provides an opportunity for pupils in Years 10 and 11 to develop the skills of effective spoken English. Teams of three students can take part in the event, with each member taking one of three roles – chairperson, speaker or questioner. The competition helps participants develop their knowledge of topical issues, their speech-writing skills and their ability to think on their feet.
The Perse was scheduled to field a team in the event (where in previous years our teams have won through to the later stages of the competition), but unfortunately we had to withdraw our team due to illness. Nevertheless, this was a fantastic opportunity to host such a highly-regarded national event, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all of those who took part. We look forward to getting involved again next year.
