Down on the farm

Reception began their topic on farming by paying a visit to Denny Abbey Farm Museum last week. As well as seeing many different types of historic farm machinery the children made bread and explored a farmworker’s cottage (where WAS the bathroom?). They also became skilled milkmaids and milkmen as they industriously and repeatedly tried their hand at milking a very patient cow. The village shop was another particular treat and the children had the opportunity to weigh out 1lb of candles, 4oz nails and 2oz of clothes pegs; how times have changed.

As always with Pelicans, thoughtful questions elicited perceptive answers, on this occasion about agricultural clothing from the past. Do you know why farmers tied string around their trouser legs?
