‘Bankers who lost interest’ investment competition success
10 Dec 2013
A team of four Sixth Form students – Fin Brown, Joe Todd, Hannah Kirk and Charlotte Grace have been named monthly regional winners in the national investment competition, the ifs University College Student Investor Challenge. They have now won a place in the regional final which will be held in March 2014.
If the team are successful in the next stages of the competition, they will take part in the national final to win an educational trip to New York.
The competition, open to students aged between 14 and 19, provides the teams with £100,000 of virtual money to buy and sell shares in FTSE 100 companies, giving them the opportunity to experience the fast-paced world of share dealing and investing in the stock market.
The team, named ‘Bankers who lost interest’ increased their share portfolio value by nearly £37,000 in November, outperforming the FTSE 100 and every other school in the country taking part, since the start of trading – an outstanding achievement!
Jon Young, Head of Economics at the Perse comments on the team’s success:
“The “Bankers who lost interest” team has invested a huge amount of time conducting detailed research into the latest developments facing a wide variety of listed businesses. Achieving the best-performing share portfolio of any UK team is a great achievement and is a testament to the hard work and investment talents of everyone in the team.”
Alison Pask, Vice Principal of ifs University College adds:
“This competition gives students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of making investment decisions, which will benefit them throughout their lives when making financial choices. It also introduces them to core concepts such as risk, reward and diversification. This is a real achievement and many congratulations go to the team from Cambridge.”
We wish the team the very best of luck in the next round of the competition in the Spring.
