U13 Northumberland Rugby tour
The U13A squad travelled to Northumberland over the weekend of 8-10 November for their annual rugby tour. Braving the north-east weather in November, twenty-two Year 7 and Year 8 boys played two matches against Dame Allan’s School and Tynedale RFC. They conducted themselves superbly, beating a strong Dame Allan’s outfit 17-7, but unfortunately losing 33-28 in the final play of the game against Tynedale. A special mention goes to Hal Bartlett, playing out of position at No. 8 with the absence of Flynn Cray, who was outstanding in both games, scoring three tries and making numerous barnstorming runs.
The squad also participated in a number of activities over the weekend in which they were able to inflict some humiliation on their teachers. One particular highlight was Lt. Col. Adrian Roberts separating his paintballing team into Team Alpha and Team Bravo, as well as Ben Coady’s Churchillian speech before going into battle. Following ten-pin bowling, Mr Anderson and Mr Mahendra, who proved themselves gluttons for punishment, paired up in a dodgem car. Ten minutes later both emerged with bad backs and knees while Mr Roberts serenely managed to evade all contact.
The tour was great fun and the boys who travelled were an absolute credit to the school. The U13A team will have learnt a lot from the Tynedale match, especially how to close a game down when leading in the final couple of minutes. Special thanks to Mr Roberts and Mr Mahendra for giving up their weekends to make the tour possible. The team now move on to the busiest and hardest part of the season with fixtures against Bishop’s Stortford College, Norwich and St. Faiths in the next few weeks.
