PES Summit 10 trip
7 Nov 2013
The Perse Exploration Society Summit 10 group undertook their first training weekend on the second weekend of half term. A group of 32 keen and motivated students ventured to the Peak District for a two day hike from Buxton to Baslow. The third day had the students scrambling and practicing safety on uneven and rocky ground. This was a challenging weekend with a variety of weather conditions. The weekend was generally wet with small bursts of sunshine and the occasional torrential down pour (whilst trying to cook dinner and pitch tents!).
The students were training for a 10 day expedition in the summer that will see them walk 130 miles from Blackburn to Buttermere in the Lake District following the path of Wainwright’s favourite places (Wainwright’s Way). Extensive training is required for this, and the students managed to cover a significant amount of it over the weekend. They were taught skills such as pitching lightweight tents, cooking on camp stoves, night navigation, safe scrambling, team development and camp etiquette.
The students worked fantastically as a team and showed significant skill development over the weekend. They worked hard and kept spirits high, even the rain and blisters couldn’t stop them. If the summer expedition is as enthusiastic as this weekend, we are in for a great trip.
