Choral and Chamber concert
Last Tuesday evening, nearly 100 pupils took part in a Choral and Chamber concert at the Emmanuel United Reformed Church. The programme included a demanding movement from a Dvorak String Quartet and a set of three descriptive pieces entitled Three Southern Sketches by James Rae for Clarinet Ensemble. In total, 12 ensembles took part, including a jazz quartet, oboe trio, piano trio, brass ensemble, saxophone quartet and string quartets.
Members of the Junior Chorale, under Charlotte Arthur’s direction performed 3 songs, including a number by Benjamin Britten – whose centenary we are marking next week. The concert concluded with a performance of Roderick William’s highly atmospheric work O Guiding Night conducted by Ben Wingfield. In this performance, a number of parents and other friends (as the “Friends of Perse Choir”) joined our own Perse Chorus. Roderick Williams is not only well known as a composer, but also an eminent baritone singer, and we will be privileged to welcome him to the School for some masterclass work in March 2014. This concert, which is now a regular fixture in the Perse Music calendar, was again a very enjoyable occasion and it was a pleasure to perform in the lovely space and acoustic afforded by Emmanuel United Reformed Church.
