Celebrating Indian culture
Mrs Leigh in the English department recently held an India sensory lesson in her Year 11 class to accompany and enrich the students’ study of the IGCSE exam text, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard by Kiran Desai. Students brought in food, items of traditional wooden handicraft, incense, spices, Bollywood films and music, transforming the classroom into a celebration of all things Indian.
This session introduced the Indian context element of the exam text analysis, and has been followed up by some outstanding student presentations on a wide range of topics related to Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard. These presentations contributed to the Speaking and Listening element of their IGCSE, and covered topics from food and drink in the Punjab, the Indian caste system, and fashion and art, to music and Bollywood, industrialisation in modern India, and the Geography of Punjab.
