Celebrating Benjamin Britten
In celebration of Benjamin Britten’s centenary year, and on what would have been his 100th birthday last Friday, 40 pupils from Years 7 to 9 took part in a rendition of his beloved song cycle, Friday Afternoons – but not as you’d expect! A performance by Cambridgeshire schools in the Corn Exchange was streamed to dozens of other participating schools across the county. Our pupils learned the songs from scratch in the morning before singing with the other schools from the comfort of the Music Department in the afternoon. The event was a great chance to learn Britten’s witty and well-crafted songs, and was seemingly enjoyed by hundreds of schoolchildren in the region (and, no doubt, by the thousands singing the cycle worldwide).
