Celebrating Children’s Book Week
15 Oct 2013
Celebrations have been in full swing at the Pelican and Prep last week for Children’s Book Week.
At the Pelican, the children in Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a visit from author and illustrator, Debi Gliori on Wednesday 10th October. She talked to the children about how she was inspired by books she had read and that when she starts a book, it is like an unknown path – she doesn’t know where it will all end.
Debi explained how her love of Antarctica, penguins and dragons (she wanted one as a pet when she was young!) inspired her to write Dragon Loves Penguin. She read this wonderfully magical story and showed the children how she drew her beautiful illustrations in black and white before adding the colours, usually in her studio in Scotland.
The children then had the opportunity to ask Debi questions about her work before some of them received their signed copies of her books – a lovely end to a fantastic afternoon at The Pelican.
It has been a very busy week of festivities at the Prep too. Author Claire O’Brien visited the Prep on Thursday where she read to the pupils from her book Cordelia Codd: Not Just the Blues and got them imagine their own fictional characters.
The Prep rounded off Children’s Book Week spectacularly by dressing up as their favourite book character on Friday. A fantastic effort was made by all, and we had pupils dress up as Hermione from Harry Potter, Pippi Longstocking and Vikings from How to Train your Dragon to name but a few.
