Perse are Top of the Bench
For the first time, The Perse has won the Mid-Anglia Regional "Top of the Bench" Chemistry Competition, sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
On 8th November the Chemistry department took two groups to the RSC Top of the Bench competition at Oundle School. Top of the Bench is a national competition which is run by the RSC to pit teams of the best 14-16yr olds in the country in a competition to test their practical skills and chemical knowledge beyond the Chemistry IGCSE syllabus.
Each team comprises of two pupils from Year 9, one pupil from Year 10 and one from Year 11. Therefore, an important component of the competition is to work and gel well together, with the Year 11 student passing on their experience to the younger pupils. The Perse’s winning team consisting of Claudia Tomkys (Y9), Thomas Read (Y9), Isabel Raynaud (Y10) and Daniel Jackson (Y11) managed this most commendably, obtaining 119 points out of 150. Our second team came a very respectable third: Garret Shannon (Y9), Pratap Singh (Y9), Anokh Vithayathil (Y10), Jamie Bamber (Y11) obtained 114 points.
The Perse will now represent the Mid Anglian region in the National Final of Top of the Bench in April at Imperial College, London. The Perse will also have the honour of hosting the regional heats next year and we hope that we can emulate the excellent performance of our winning team at Oundle.
