The 42: Elizabethan Spies

24 Sep 2012

The 42 welcomed Will Tosh from the Centre for Editing Lives and Letters in London to talk about his research on spies and friendships.

His title ‘On her Majesty’s secret service: Elizabethan Spy’ drew a big crowd of well over a hundred to hear about Anthony Standon and the mixed and complicated world of Queen Elizabeth the first.

Will explained how spies had a different profile and place in that era, and how multifaceted they were, and also how complex loyalties were. He referred especially to England’s relationship with Spain and France. His engaging manner and use of original documents created a lively and dynamic discussion.
