UKMT Team Maths Challenge National Final
On the 18th June teams from 80 qualifying schools battled it out in the final of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge. Each team had two pupils from Year 9 and two from Year 8. The Perse team was Richard Geng (Y9), Alex Harris (Y9), Thomas Read (Y8) and Pratap Singh (Y8).
The Perse team came third overall in the competition having tackled a cross number puzzle, a circus of demanding problems and two relay taces. They needed to be able to think quickly and work accurately under pressure, as well as working cooperatively in a team. This is our best result to date.
The team also came third in the poster competition – another Perse first. For this they had to study Mathematical Impossibility and incorporate in their design answers to questions on tiling patterns, knights tours of chess boards and the geometrical impossibilities made famous by the drawings of Escher.
This is only the second time that a Perse team has won prizes in both competitions. Congratulations to all involved!
