Under 14 Boys’ Hockey team win through to East Finals
Having won the county championship, The Perse travelled to the regional qualification round at Aldenham School in Elstree. A busy programme saw the team face Woodbridge, Gresham’s, Chigwell and Aldenham with a place in the East Final at stake.
The first game against Woodbridge was a slow start for The Perse but a short corner routine was finished off by Freddie Perkins, before Adam Davis added a second in a game that ended 2-1. Gresham’s looked like strong opposition and a very tight game saw The Perse emerge as 1-0 winners thanks to a calm finish by Misha Karmiloff. The team at this stage topped the pool as the first ones to register two wins from two games.
As other matches unfolded, opposition teams were all taking points off each other and by the time the team took the field against Chigwell it was a situation whereby a win would take The Perse through to the next stage of the National Schools Championships. In another tense game, The Perse had a lot of possession without converting a number of chances, thanks in part to an outstanding display by the Chigwell goalkeeper. Ultimately Misha Karmiloff broke the deadlock and slotted home from close range. In the dying seconds Hugh Bishop finished decisively to ensure the side won this qualification pool.
The final game of the day was a bit of an anti-climax as The Perse lost a very scrappy game 1-0 to Aldenham. The toil that had gone into the earlier matches had taken its toll and the level of performance did not reflect some of the excellent hockey that the team had produced earlier in the day. There was though enough energy left for plenty of celebratory singing on the journey home!
The Perse now progress to the triangular East Finals tournament where they will face the winners of the other two regional qualification pools. We await news of our opposition, with a place in the National Finals at stake.
The East Finals will be played at UEA Norwich on Tuesday 13th March 2012.
