Last Friday twenty Year 11 students had the great privilege of hearing some of the country’s leading poets reading their work to a packed audience of teenagers at The Corn Exchange, Cambridge. It was sheer delight to have The National Poet for Wales, Gillian Clarke sharing the stage with The Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy and for them to reference and read works from earlier poets, Yeats and Wordsworth as they explained their own poetic journeys. We really enjoyed hearing Gillian’s account of what inspired her poem, 'Lament' which we have studied for IGCSE English Literature.
Simon Armitage was one of Perse students’ favourites for his combination of stand up comedy and poetic skill; his wise and witty thoughts on tattoos have already inspired a piece of oral coursework this week in class!
