The Perse School

Year 3 STEM and Junk Orchestra days

23 Jan 2012

Year 3 spent last Monday building bridges and rockets and manufacturing shapes from paper cylinders. The highlight of the day was launching the rockets. The enthusiasm and cheers as each rocket sped away was a credit to the team of volunteers from STEM who came for the day. The children also found out more about the very varied work each volunteer does in their 'day' job – a real encouragement to take up engineering.  STEM works with schools to actively promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Tuesday was 'junk orchestra' day. The children had a motivating demonstration of how different instruments could be played and everyone had the opportunity to play some of the larger tuned instruments brought in by our guest musician/instrument maker/story teller. In the afternoon the children designed, built, decorated and played their unique instruments with great enthusiasm. Our thanks to the many parents who helped provide the raw materials for the amazing instruments.
