German Christmas Markets
15 Dec 2011
The traditional Lower School Christmas markets trip to Cologne and Aachen is a much anticipated event. In the early hours of Friday 9th December forty boys and girls from Years 7 and 8, accompanied by Mr Brunskill, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Pullen, Mr Green and Mr Lewis, left The Perse, arriving at our youth hostel eleven hours later. After a welcome evening meal, the group set off to experience the cathedral market at night. To say that it was busy would be an understatement! However, the scent of mulled wine, roast chestnuts and Christmas sweets was enough to make the battle through the crowds worthwhile.
Saturday allowed us time to explore the cathedral itself, with a splendid vista from the top viewing tower on a brightly sunlight morning. After some further time visiting the markets we headed towards the Lindt-Imhoff chocolate factory and museum – yet another chance to stock up on Christmas presents. The afternoon was rounded off with a two hour Rhine Advent cruise, featuring musical entertainment from some of our own Perseans who sang a festive tune to the delight of all on board! Saturday evening was a chance to visit a different market, and practise ice skating techniques!
Sunday morning came and it was already time to leave Germany and head for home – making one final stop at Aachen market en route. It was a hectic schedule, but truly worth it. Thank you to everybody who made this trip a great experience.
