Year 3 explore Materials
11 Nov 2011
David Cebon, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, came in to give a talk about Materials, the Year 3 physical science topic this term. After discussing what engineers do, he led the children through the decisions engineers have to make to help them choose the materials they use for the things we find all around us every day.
Professor Cebon's talk culminated in a series of experiments which the children completed to work out how the properties of materials affect what they can be used for. The children used two kilogram masses to test the flexibility of rods of different materials but had to be careful not to let those weights land on their toes!
