Indoor Hockey: U16 Boys win County Championship
7 Nov 2011
A busy month for Indoor Hockey began well on Wednesday 2nd November as the Boys Under 16 squad won the Cambridgeshire Championship. They will now represent the county at the East Championships in Bedford on November 20th.
The Perse hosted the tournament and in the first game of the tournament they faced Newport Free Grammar School. An early goal settled the nerves as the side went on to win 4-0. Other sides were playing well and the matches against Thomas Deacon Academy and The Leys were looking crucial from a very early stage.
Against TDA, it took a while for The Perse to edge ahead to take a 3-1 lead and some confusion over defensive masks at a late penalty corner prevented Perse from defending it properly. In the end they saw home a 3-2 victory, setting up a crunch match against The Leys.
The match between The Perse and The Leys was played at a frantic tempo and local rivalry played a big part in some of the tackles. In spite of the game’s scrappy nature, The Perse maintained their shape and used the boards to good effect coming away 2-1 winners.
At this stage, the team knew that only a defeat would allow anyone else to take the title and the game against Saffron Walden County High School saw a lot of intercepted passes by both teams and a 1-1 draw reflected the balance of play very accurately.
James Knoop scored his 6th goal of the tournament against SWCHS, an impressive haul given that each game was only 12 minutes in length. Tom Sherrington-Scales, the team captain, led by example throughout and Bryn Kendrick-Jones, in goal, made some outstanding saves.
The team now look foreward to the East Championships and the schools other Indoor hockey squads will be hoping to qualify for that stage of the National Schools indoor Competition as well.
