Perse is flagship for launch of Poet Laureate’s ‘Anthologise’ competition
Chris Dodsworth, Alex Turner and Ruby Andrews represented The Perse English and Drama department, along with Miss Cullen, at the launch of Carol Ann Duffy’s national poetry competition, ‘Anthologise’.
The launch took place at Alexandra Park School, Haringey where the students took part in dynamic poetry workshops run by poets such as John Agard and Grace Nichols. HRH the Duchess of Cornwall accompanied Carol Ann Duffy in emphasising poetry as ‘the music of being human’. The Poet Laureate shared her favourite poem, Yeats’ ‘The Song of Wandering Aengus’ while Her Royal Highness treated us to a reading of Burns’ ‘My Heart is in the Highlands’ before unveiling a poetry tree which featured all three excellent poems of our students. Ruby Andrews was selected to read her poem ‘The Paper’ and was the only student present to share her own original poetry with the press in this way, receiving fantastic feedback from many high profile poets including Gillian Clarke. Our students were a wonderful asset to the school in both their mature demeanour and in their clear passion for poetry.
