There are lots of opportunities for all pupils to take part in a sporting club or society, the majority of which take place at lunchtime or after school.
The athletics programme is delivered during curriculum PE time and is an option in the summer games programme. Pupils can compete in three or four athletic meetings throughout the season.
The Year 9 and 10 track and field teams have been county champions for the last five years while our combined boys’ and girls’ team in Years 7 to 10 won the Jubilee Cup in 2014, making them the top school in the district.
The popularity of basketball is growing rapidly at The Perse. The senior boys are coached by Clinton Wedderburn, a CATS Basketball Club Level 3 coach. The Year 9 and Year 10 Basketball Academy also have matches.
In 2015/16 the U19 squad won the Cambridge Championship, while the U14 were County runners-up. In 2014/15 the senior team reached the play-offs in the Cambridge U19 Championship, while the U16s were semi-finalists in the District Cup and Cambridgeshire County Cup.
- Cross country
Cross country club runs once a fortnight in each age group during games and once a week after school. We have teams for all age groups and compete regularly in local and national competitions. In 2015/16 the junior boys’ team won the Independent Schools Championships; the junior and intermediate boys’ teams made the national schools finals; and the girls’ and boys’ teams combined won the District schools event for the second year in succession.
All pupils take dance in Years 7 and 8 as part of their PE lessons and it is a Senior Games option in the Sixth Form.
We run several dance clubs, enabling pupils to enjoy a range of styles, from contemporary to street jazz, and participate in the annual Bodywork Outreach dance show, with brings together the most talented dancers in the region.
We partner with Cambridge Swords Fencing Club who run their youth and senior fencing programmes at the School using our sports studio. It offers our students the opportunity to participate in a community club and offers greater scope to progress as their skills improve. Tournaments and competitions are organised by Cambridge Swords.
In 2016/17 fencing has been introduced to the girls’ games programme, starting with the Middle School.
The School has a well-equipped fitness suite to which all age groups have access. The School employs a conditioning coach who runs fitness clubs at lunchtime and after school for those students who wish to follow a fitness programme.
We run football club for Years 7 and 8 during lunch breaks for the first half of the Michaelmas term.
Football enters the games programme in the Sixth Form. We run 1st and 2nd XI teams and have a substantial fixture list.
- Boys and girls indoor hockey
The boys’ and girls’ teams have had much success in the indoor hockey national schools competition. We are very fortunate to have a full size indoor pitch and a very experienced coaching staff. Taster training sessions start at U14 level, fixtures at U16 and U18 level.
We enter the national schools competition and host the county rounds at the School. Indoor Hockey is run as a lunchtime and after school club and does not clash with other sporting commitments.
- Table tennis
We have eight indoor table tennis tables and four outdoor tables. Students can join an after school club to play indoors and can play outdoors during break or lunchtime. The sport is predominately played recreationally.
