Summit 12

Combine an expedition to a mountainous location with helping a community

Number of members 40
Year group Sixth Form
Skills developed This group aims to develop students’ outdoor skills, cultural understanding and teamwork skills in preparation for a three-week international expedition to a mountainous location.
Structure There is a strong focus on student leadership. The group is divided into groups known as ‘Fires’ which are headed up by student ‘Fire Leaders’.
Meetings Meetings are held fortnightly during school time, on the Enrichment afternoon. Here students learn all of the skills required for the year’s field weekends and expedition.
Trips Each year, Summit 12 completes two main trips: a training weekend and the main expedition. On the training weekend, students learn mountaineering and first aid, how to work as a team and how to respond to unexpected challenges. The summer expeditions can last up to four weeks, with past expeditions visiting Ecuador, Kenya and the Indian Himalayas.  Here students take part in charity work with the local community and trek at high altitudes.
