In addition to our main curriculum, we offer a three year extra-curricular course leading to a GCSE qualification in the following languages:
Lessons take place over one lunchtime and one after-school session per week, equivalent to just under seven teaching periods per fortnight. Following a free three-week trial period at the start of the academic year, a modest annual payment is payable to subsidise the cost of running these additional classes.
Students usually study these courses in Years 9, 10 and 11. We provide a brief introduction to Italian and Mandarin in Year 8 via our language studies course, and there is a Year 7 club to enable students to start exploring the languages ahead of the GCSE course.
Mandarin is offered as part of the main curriculum from Year 9 to GCSE. Pupils considering studying Mandarin in Year 9 are strongly encouraged to attend Mandarin Club in Year 8.
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)/A level Italian
Where there is sufficient student interest, we also look to offer a similar subsidised extra-curricular preparation for the JLPT in Japanese in one year and the Italian A level over two years for Sixth Form students. This runs in similar fashion to the courses above.
