Religious Studies & Philosophy
What will your child study?
In the Middle School all pupils study compulsory Religious Studies from Year 9 through to Year 11. Pupils can make the decision to opt for the Edexcel IGCSE in Religious Studies during Year 9, beginning in Year 10.
The IGCSE course comprises two components: Beliefs and Values and The Religious Community. Pupils develop their thinking skills throughout the course which covers a diverse but interrelated spectrum of topics such as abortion and euthanasia, arguments for the existence of God, religious texts and sources of authority, and the problem of evil.
During the compulsory course pupils study:
Year 9 – Judaism, Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust
Year 10 – Islam and its understanding in a multi-cultural society
Year 11 – Philosophical and Ethical Issues
How will they be assessed?
Pupils are assessed throughout the IGCSE course through marked homeworks relating to exam-style questions, and through end of topic standardised tests. They will sit a mock examination in January of year 11.
There is no homework for the compulsory Religious Studies classes; however classwork is marked in a conversational style which aims to develop the pupils’ opinions and ideas.
