What will your child study?

In Year 9 it is possible to study one, two or three modern foreign languages, as MFL forms part of the options columns.  Having studied French and German/Spanish in Year 8, it is possible to continue with these subjects as well as taking up a third foreign language.  Japanese becomes part of the options list in Year 9 (which may be studied to GCSE in Year 11).  Whilst our options system provides flexibility in language choices, it is not advisable to drop all languages previously studied in favour of one brand new MFL at this stage, as this would have to be taken at (I)GCSE level without the pupil having any prior knowledge of the subject.

It is a fundamental requirement to study at least one MFL to (I)GCSE.

To help with preparation for the oral examination, all pupils spend a regular part of their lesson time with the Oral Language teacher, who helps them with conversation practice.

How will they be assessed?

The work covered in Year 9 marks the beginning of the IGCSE course (GCSE in Japanese).   We follow the Edexcel IGCSE courses in French, Spanish and German, and the Edexcel GCSE course in Japanese.  You can find out more on the individual language pages or at the Edexcel website.

There are many useful MFL practice and revision sites.  Two recommended ones are:
