Japanese
“Don’t be single! Be Bilingual.”(anon) or trilingual or quadrilingual…
The Japanese department at The Perse is composed of teachers who are genuinely excited about their subject and committed to using pioneering methods and contemporary material to bring the Japanese language and culture to life for all of our pupils.
In studying Japanese, pupils investigate not only the language but also the culture of the countries where it is spoken. All four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught simultaneously and much use is made of realia and virtual scenarios to put the language into context. Pupils have a chance to meet Japanese visitors to the school and to visit Japan.
We seek to engage pupils in learning Japanese by encouraging them to work and think independently and by ensuring our teaching is stimulating, varied and creative. In addition, we strongly believe that interaction with native speakers is an essential component of the subject and pupils have an opportunity to do this several times during their course.
