German
What will your child study?
If your child did not take up German in Year 8, it is also possible to study it ab initio in Year 9. For those continuing with German in Year 9, the second year of study covers the following: Holidays; Shopping; Free Time; Health and Fitness; Future Plans; Going on an Exchange. In Year 10, pupils continuing with German prepare for the IGCSE examination. Topics covered in Year 8 and/or 9 are revisited and built upon, and new topics are covered to ensure that pupils develop their knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary, expressions and grammatical structures. In Year 11, in addition to focussing on examination technique and practice papers, the aim is to teach beyond the basic requirements of IGCSE in order to provide a sounder footing for those wishing to continue at AS/A2 level. From Year 10, all pupils of German have some lesson time with the Oral Language Teacher to assist with preparation for the Oral examination.
How will your child be assessed?
There are five main topic areas as defined by the IGCSE German specification:
- A – Home and Abroad
- B – Education and Employment
- C – House, Home and Daily Routine
- D – The Modern World and the Environment
- E – Social activities, Fitness and Health
The IGCSE examination has three components:
Paper 1 – Listening
Paper 2 – Reading and Writing
Paper 3 – Oral
