French
“Learning a language makes our minds stronger and more flexible. Actually using it gives us an entirely new experience of the world” (John Cleese)
The French department team consists of twelve talented and committed teachers, three of whom are native speakers. Whether we are teaching Year 7 beginners or an Upper Sixth A level group, we aim to stimulate within our pupils a love of language learning in general and of French in particular. We believe that an oral approach to language learning is essential if pupils are to speak and write fluently in French, and consequently oral work in its various forms is the basis of most lessons. Pupils are encouraged to read as much as possible, and the library is equipped with a range of readers, magazines, newspapers and literary texts, as well as an extensive collection of French film DVDs for borrowing.
Our specific aims are to:
- Develop the ability to use French as a means of practical communication
- Acquire a sound base of skills necessary for future study, work and leisure
- Understand the nature of French and the process of language learning
- Develop an independent approach to learning
- Develop an appreciation of a variety of literary and non-literary texts
- Have an insight into the cultural characteristics of the French-speaking world and an awareness and understanding of the perspectives of people from other cultures
- Develop a curiosity and lifelong interest and enjoyment in language learning
