Modern Languages
“Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.” Benjamin Lee Whorf, American Linguist
The Modern Foreign Languages department offers a wide range of European and non-European languages. The breadth and depth of experience shared by the teachers is one of the department’s key strengths.
Pupils are encouraged not only to immerse themselves in the language they are studying but also to learn about different cultures in a variety of contexts and themes.
At The Perse we do not foster one particular concept of a typical language lesson, but seek to engage pupils through diverse media and teaching strategies. Pair work, group work, and teacher-led activities are the mainstay of languages classes, but emphasis is placed on allowing the individual teacher’s style to stamp their own hallmark on lesson delivery and the promotion of language learning. All classes have regular access to ICT facilities where they can work on a wealth of MFL resources to hone the chief skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Having a command of another language is a valuable skill and one which many of our students choose to develop to A2 level, at university and in their future careers.
