English and Drama
Trips
We offer all pupils the chance to join our regular programme of trips to the theatre – in Cambridge, London, Stratford-upon-Avon and elsewhere.
Sixth Formers are taken to conferences and readings in order to augment their studies.
At school
The English and Drama department oversees a wide range of academic, extra-curricular and extension activities, including:
- Literary Society
- Junior Drama Club
- Middle School Drama Club
- Writers’ Workshop (Middle School)
- Sketch Club (comedy)
- Parents’ Reading Group
- Talks and readings by authors
- The Mastermind Book Challenge
- The Times Spelling Bee
- Poetry Live
We run two debating clubs:
- Junior Debating Society (the Forum)
- Senior Debating Society
We also enter pupils annually for a wide range of external Public Speaking and Debating events, competitions and workshops:
- Debating Matters
- The English-Speaking Union (two age categories)
- The Rotary ‘Youth Speaks’ competition (three age categories)
- Cambridge Union Society
- The Oxford Union
We hold annual events to celebrate:
- Book Week
- World Book Day
- National Poetry Day
- National Schools’ Film Week
- ‘Booked-Up’
We run a range of in-house writing and Public Speaking competitions, including:
- The Year 7 Arts Festival poetry and prose competitions
- The Caffall Cup for Public Speaking
- The Armitstead poetry competition
We offer pupils the opportunity to enter for external challenges including:
- The Rotary (Cambridgeshire) essay competition
- The Betty Haigh Shakespeare Prize
- Poetry Now
We also encourage pupils to submit their writing to the school’s ‘Carpe Diem’ magazine and to compile their own anthologies and blogs.
