Latin
What will your child study?
In the Lower School pupils are encouraged to develop the ability to read Latin in adapted form, extending their knowledge of grammar and syntax both for Latin and other languages. We help pupils to develop a basic Latin vocabulary, highlighting the links between Latin and other languages, including English.
We investigate the content, style and values of Roman, Egyptian and Greek civilisations and strive to acquire a basic understanding of some historical events from the late 1st Century AD.
As a department we are committed to encouraging pupils to compare and contrast civilisations different from their own and separated by time and place, encompassing ideas that are relevant to developing an understanding of the world around them today and how it has been shaped by the past.
In Year 7 we base our study on Book I of the Cambridge Latin Course, set in Pompeii at the foot of Vesuvius in 79AD. The life of Caecilius and his family is the setting for some exciting stories in this famous Roman city, frozen in time.
In Year 8 we base our study on Book II of the Cambridge Latin Course, gaining familiarity with the lives of Romans in Britain and Egypt, following the journeys of a Mediterranean traveller.
How will they be assessed?
Pupils will be assessed through marked homework, vocabulary tests and regular attainment tests. These attainment tests take the form of a written translation, often with a comprehension element. There are also opportunities for creative and more independent tasks too.
