Latin
“Instead of thinking of his school work, as he often does, as a series of horrible gloomy tasks, his memories will be of pleasant hours which he thoroughly enjoyed. If you remember that Latin is, for some boys, the highest intellectual exercise he has ever had or ever will have, you will see that these pleasant memories would be transferred to intellectual work.” Dr WHD Rouse, Headmaster of The Perse 1902-1928
The Classics department at The Perse has a commitment to setting alight the intellectual curiosity that pupils have. Over the years Latin has been taught in innovative and inspiring ways and the department takes an active role in finding fresh and exciting ways to teach about the language and culture of the Romans and their empire.
Latin is more than just a language. It offers a window into the lives of our ancestors, who lived in a cosmopolitan European society. Many of the issues that are such great concerns today were equally important to the inhabitants of the Roman world some two thousand years ago. Through gaining an understanding of the language they used, we can explore more deeply the similarities and differences between the cultures, engaging with literature that has influenced so many later authors.
The excitement of some of the most famous stories of all time allows pupils to further their knowledge of the language and the beliefs of the Roman world. From Hercules to Boudicca, Hannibal to Nero, there is something for everyone in the Latin studied at The Perse.
