Greek

“Should those who want to see clearly the events which have happened, and understand events that will happen again (a result of human nature), pronounce what I have written to be useful, then my goal will have been achieved. It has been collated, not to be reeled off as a prize winning speech, but as a possession for all time.” Thucydides

The study of Classical Greek is an academic challenge that provides huge satisfaction. As well as the excitement of delving into a new alphabet (and seeing from where the very word alphabet itself comes), there is an enormous amount to be gained from reading some of the most famous and influential authors of all time in their original form. Whether it is tales of the Cyclops from Homer’s Odyssey or Plato telling us of the thought-provoking philosophy of Socrates, the ability to investigate the nuances of the original text adds a vast amount to the study of such works.

The Classics department at The Perse is proud to offer Greek at every level, from absolute beginner through to preparation for university courses. We are fortunate to have teachers with specialist knowledge of Greek language and literature, who enjoy the opportunity to share their enthusiasm for Hellenic culture with their pupils.

Those who study Greek reap the rewards of a deepened understanding of language generally as well as the specifics of Greek itself. The cultural influences of Hellenism are visible in many ways, from the grand monumental architecture of the Fitzwilliam to the medical terminology used in many parts of Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The Perse is committed to ensuring Greek is taught in a way that maintains contemporary relevance whilst ensuring rapid progress to a very high standard.
