University entrants

We are proud of the numbers of Perse pupils who go on to study Chemistry or Natural Sciences at university. In addition, many of our students go on to use their chemistry in medical, veterinary and engineering degrees.

We aim to support and extend all students who wish to apply for Chemistry at University through a range of specially arranged activities including mock interviews, lectures, study-day visits and Headstart courses.  Our students have been fortunate over the years to get experience of research through Nuffield Bursaries as well as several varied work placements.  We were delighted that one of our students managed to gain a place at the Weizmann Institute’s International Summer Science Institute in Rehovot, Israel in the summer of 2011. This was an amazing opportunity to work in a team of Year 13 students from across the world supervised by top research scientists.

Competitions

We were delighted to see the success of our Sixth Form students in last year’s Chemistry Olympiad. We believe that our students achieved more medals in 2011 than any other school in the country and this included six Gold medals with the highest placed getting through to the final selection round. Our Lower Sixth students entered the C3L6 competition run by Cambridge University and four of our students achieved Gold awards whilst one came in the top 1% nationally and received a Roentgenium award.  The department also enters teams of Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils into the Royal Society of Chemistry’s ‘Top of the Bench’ competition where they compete against pupils from other local schools.  We also entered a Year 11 team for the science quiz at Hills Road SFC.
