Chemistry
“Tell me and I shall forget,
show me and I shall remember,
involve me and I shall understand” Chinese proverb
We aim to stimulate pupils’ curiosity whilst developing their enjoyment and interest in chemistry. Through creative teaching we hope to encourage pupils to explore the social, environmental and technological aspects of chemistry and to consider the importance and value of these in society.
We aim to illustrate theoretical ideas with as much relevant experimental work as possible. The courses that we offer enable pupils to develop essential knowledge and understanding of chemical concepts along with the skills required to apply their knowledge and understanding to practical situations. We teach all classes in five modern laboratories, all equipped with fume cupboards.
At all levels in the school the department aims to:
- Stimulate interest in and enthusiasm for chemistry.
- Enable pupils to understand the distinctive language, methods and logic of chemistry.
- Inculcate an appreciation of the importance of chemistry in the world around us.
- Encourage a logical and practical approach to problem solving.
- Instil a balanced view of chemicals and chemistry in our society.
- Teach and encourage sound practical skills (including safety), good working habits and study skills.
- Prepare pupils for public examinations.
The Chemistry department at The Perse is composed of subject specialists and we believe that this is of considerable benefit to our pupils throughout the age range. We seek to engage pupils in learning chemistry by encouraging them to think independently whilst assimilating the key tenets of the subject. We aim to ensure this by making our teaching stimulating, varied and creative.
