University entrants
In the majority of cases our Biology students go on to use their biology in degrees such as Dentistry, Medicine and Veterinary Science rather than purely biological sciences. This is indicative of the subject’s flexibility and applicability across a broad spectrum of degree subjects. In 2011 the school had 18 students go on to read Medicine, one to read Veterinary Science and eight to read biological science courses, such as Biochemistry.
Competitions
The Biology department enters students from Years 12 and 13 into the annual Biology Olympiad. In 2010/2011 students achieved 4 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals and 1 highly commended and 3 commended awards. Two of our gold award winners (Matthew Morgan and Luke Perera) were in the top 40 highest scoring students (from 2,850 students who took part nationally) and were invited to the second round of the competition. As Luke is in Year 12 he declined this opportunity until next year as this part of the competition can only be taken once. We look forward to more excellent performances in 2011/2012.
Pupils from Years 9 and 10 are all entered into the national Biology Challenge competition. 20,000 pupils entered this competition and Perse pupils achieved a fantastic 177 awards. This included 36 gold, 53 silver, 46 bronze, 27 highly commended and 15 commended awards. Jamie Bamber and Francis Herne were amongst the top 40 highest scoring pupils in the country and were invited to the awards ceremony in London to be presented with their awards from Professor Steve Jones.
