Sport
There are many opportunities to take part in a variety of sports including:
Athletics – the majority of students who take part in athletics are also involved in other summer sports. The athletics programme is delivered through PE and is optional in the summer games programme. The school competes in three to four athletic meetings throughout the season. The Year 9 and 10 track and field teams have been county champions for the last four years; our most talented athletes are encouraged to train at Cambridge Coleridge Athletics Club.
Badminton – all pupils get the opportunity to learn badminton in Years 7 to 11 in their Physical Education lessons, badminton can also be chosen in Years 11 and the Sixth Form as a games option. There are fixtures against Hills Road and Long Road Sixth Form Colleges and CCSS, CATS and CRC, as well as an opportunity to play recreationally amongst friends. Lower down the school we enter teams into the District Schools' Competition.
Basketball - the popularity of basketball is growing rapidly at The Perse. In 2009 the U18 boys' team won the league and achieved runners up in the Cambridge district tournament. The Senior boys are coached by Clinton Wedderburn, CATS Basketball Club Level 3 coach. The Year 9 and Year 10 Basketball Academy also have matches.
Dance is delivered for all pupils in PE in Years 7 and 8 and is a Senior Games option in Year 11 and Sixth Form. There is also a Monday club run by a Bodyworks instructor. This group works throughout the year on a variety of dance styles and techniques. The school enters a Junior and Senior dance group into an outreach performance held at West Road.
Fencing – the school has joined with Cambridge Swords Fencing Club who now run their youth and senior fencing programmes at the school using our Sports Studio. It offers our students the opportunity to participate in a community club and offers greater scope to progress as their skills improve. Tournaments and competitions are organised by Cambridge Swords.
Fitness (programmes arranged by the school's Conditioning Coach) – the school has a well-equipped fitness suite which allows access to all age groups. Physical Education curriculum classes and A level Physical Education sets use the facility for health related fitness and learn to develop their own fitness programmes. The school employs a conditioning coach who runs fitness clubs at lunchtime and after school for those students who wish to follow a fitness programme.
Football – we run football club for Years 7, 8 and 9 during lunch breaks throughout the year. Football enters the games programme in Year 11 and the Sixth Form. We run 1st and 2nd XI teams and have a substantial fixture list. The Sixth Formers are also enjoying the indoor football league that runs every Friday after school.
Boys' and Girls' Indoor Hockey (Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form – National Schools) - the boys and girls have had much success in the indoor hockey national schools competition. We are very fortunate to have a full size indoor pitch and a very experienced coaching staff. Taster training sessions start at U14 level and then we develop teams and play fixtures at U16 and U18 level. We enter the national schools competition and host the county rounds at the school. Indoor Hockey is run as a lunchtime and after school club and does not clash with other sporting commitments.
Kung Fu has proven to be very popular. It offers pupils the opportunity to take part in a non-contact and non-competitive martial art run by Cambridge Kung Fu. The pupils are entered for their gradings each summer and get to progress to a higher level. Many of the more experienced pupils help with the coaching and running of the club.
Rounders is a growing sport at the school. It is very popular amongst all age groups, allowing the pupils to enjoy playing at the level suitable to their ability. The fast paced and competitive nature of the sport endorses elements such as team spirit, fair play and sportsmanship which we aim to develop in students. Focussed training and practices led by experienced coaches allow the refining of core skills such as throwing, catching and hitting. All students in Years 7 to 11 are given the opportunity to play in rounders fixtures during the Summer Term, with two teams per age group. In addition, the Sixth Form students also field at least one team. Regular matches are played against schools such as St Faiths, The Leys and Kimbolton School.
Boys’ and Girls' Touch Rugby (Cambridge Touch League) – the increasing popularity of Touch resulted in us running it as a Year 11 and Sixth Form games option in the Summer Term. We enter a boys U18 and U16, a girls U18 team and a mixed U18 team into the local Touch League. It has proven very popular and great opportunity to promote sport in a mixed environment. We have had two ex-pupils, Edmund Rawe and Ben Creese, who represented the England Touch Team in the World Cup 2011.
Squash (Inter school fixtures) – we have two squash courts that allows us to have squash as a games option in Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form. We play a handful of fixtures although squash is predominantly played as a recreational sport. The courts are available for students to play on during lunchtimes and after school.
Table Tennis - we have eight indoortable tennis tables and four outdoor tables. Students can join an after school club to play indoors and can play outdoors during break or lunchtime. The sport is predominately played recreationally, however if there is sufficient student talent we enter the national schools competition. In 2008 we achieved 4th place in the National Finals.
Trampolining – we have two junior trampolines and run an after school club. The club caters for beginners up to those who can perform a front summersault.
Other sports offered include:
- Golf (team and golf academy)
- Inter form competitions
- Rugby 7’s (U13, U16 and U18)
- Shooting (National Schools)
