Cricket
Aim
Our cricket structure is moving with the modern era of cricket. We have introduced a programme of developing and practicing key skills in addition to structured and focused nets sessions for all pupils playing cricket.
Coaching staff
Every team is taken by a member of staff who will manage the team both for practices and matches against other schools. There are a number of well qualified cricket coaches on the staff and we also use professional coaches linked with Granta CC and Saffron Walden CC. The professional coaches offer us the flexibility to provide one to one coaching and master classes based on certain aspects of the game.
Teams
In the Lower School we combine Year 7 and Year 8 in order to improve the overall standard and ensure more pupils are involved in competitive fixtures against other schools. At Year 9 we field four teams, Year 10 three teams, and at senior level we have a 1sts, 2nds and 3rds.
There is a strong fixture list in the Summer Term and pupils play against some of the best teams in East Anglia and beyond. The U14 and U15 take part in the 40 over and T20 County Cups and, if these teams are successful, they play in the National rounds of their cups.
We have block fixtures against Bedford, Oundle, Uppingham, The Leys, Norwich, Chigwell, Culford, Bishop's Stortford College, Ipswich and Stamford. We also have fixtures against schools such as Magdalen College School (pre-season), Saffron Walden, Felsted Prep, St Faiths and St Johns (Lower School).
The Perse has been one of the strongest cricket schools in Cambridgeshire for a number of recent years. The U14 (2010) and U15 (2010, 2011) teams are regional County Cup winners. The U15’s (2009, 2011) are also reigning champions of the Twenty/20 Competition at Magdalen College School, Oxford.
Tours
We tour St Lucia in the Caribbean at U13-U15 level every two years during the Easter holidays as part of our pre-season. The standard of cricket out there is good and it provides a fantastic cultural experience for the pupils also. There is potential to tour Sri Lanka and Australia in the future. The next Cricket Tour will be Easter 2013.
Talented individuals
We have many pupils at various age groups who play county cricket for Cambridgeshire, Essex and Northants. Selected pupils have gone on to Academy level within these counties, paving the way for future cricketing success at county level and beyond.
Local links
We are in the fortunate position of being surrounded by excellent cricket clubs ranging from Granta Cricket Club in Cambridge itself to Saffron Walden, Burwell, Godmanchester, Sawston and Foxton. Many of our pupils play for these teams in both the Tucker Gardner Premier League and the East Anglian Premier League.
