Perse Exploration Society
The Perse Exploration Society (PES) is an outdoor pursuits group that runs for students in Years 7 to the Upper Sixth. PES members at The Upper are also joined by pupils in Year 6 from The Prep.
The Ascent Group
This group consists of 120 pupils between Years 7 and 10 that meets once a week on Friday evenings from 5.30pm-8pm to take part in a combination of outdoor skills training, team building exercises, games and adventurous activities. The way the group is organised allows huge potential for leadership and personal development.
Occasionally the group will spend the night away in order to continue activities on Saturday morning. There are also two compulsory camps for all those involved in the programme – one during the first half of the Michaelmas Term and one during the first two weeks of the summer holidays. There are also two optional trips – the Winter Hill walking trip in December for Years 9 and above and a water activities and climbing trip during Easter.
Summit Groups
Pupils can chose to participate in PES as part of the Enrichment Programme during Year 11 and the Sixth Form. At this stage, they are training and preparing for an international expedition. In recent years, Year 11 expeditions have been to Sweden and Sixth Form expeditions have been to Kenya and Ladakh. The expeditions normally have some adventurous acitivites such as white water rafting and mountaineering, as well as an element of community or conservation work
There are two field weekends over the course of the year to ensure students have all the necessary survival skills before the expeditions. These typically include first aid, navigation, bushcraft, foraging and night exercises.
