Music
Our vision is for music-making to be at the forefront of Perse life: for musical activity to be something that inspires and delights students in equal measure. Our aim is for any student to be able to benefit from a musical experience, regardless of his/her ability (our ‘music for all’ philosophy). At the same time, we want our most excellent students (we have around 50 music scholars in the school) to be constantly challenged and motivated by working at the highest level.
The department, consisting of an experienced team of Director of Music, Assistant Director of Music/Head of Curricular Music, part-time classroom teacher and over twenty peripatetics with instrumental specialism, collectively deliver around 500 individual lessons each week. These operate on a rotational basis for pupils in Years 7 to 11; Sixth Form students normally have their instrumental lesson fixed into a free period. We offer tuition in piano, organ, singing and all the orchestral and band instruments. In 2011, we appointed a professional composer to the visiting staff. We also offer classes in Grade 5 theory and advanced aural tests (Grades 5-8) to help pupils preparing for the relevant examinations.
We want to be a department that is brimming with musical energy and enthusiasm and hope that this is conveyed by the hundreds of pupils who take part in a regular activity. For anyone who has a special interest in music, we would be delighted to share this with you and arrange a meeting with the Director of Music (Mr Gavin Richards) prior to the formal entrance process. We can also answer questions by email (music@perse.co.uk) or telephone 01223 403831.
