Duke of Edinburgh
A real adventure
The Duke of of Edinburgh programme is for pupils aged 14 and upwards. The Perse runs programmes at two levels: Silver and Gold, both of which lead to a Duke of Edinburgh's Award. An Award is achieved by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five for Gold).
Pupils may find themselves helping people in the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential activity (Gold only). Many pupils find they are gaining recognition for commitments they already have. for example, e.sports and music.
DofE is a long term commitment and pupils have to take responsibility for their own progression throughout the award.
Silver
A Silver Duke of Edinburgh programme has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. Pupils need to do at least 6 months Volunteering and a minimum of 6 months on either Physical or Skills and 3 months on the other. If the pupils has not done the Bronze Award, they must undertake a further 6 months volunteering or 12 months of either Physical or Skills.
The Expedition section involves a training day, practise expedition and an assessed three day (two night) expedition that is organised by the school through AtoZ expeditions.
Pupils will be required to update their DofE profile on a regular basis. Drop in sessions will be available during lunchtimes/after school to guide pupils through DofE.
Gold
In the Sixth Form, pupils can do the Gold Duke of Edinburgh programme.
They will spend 12 months on Volunteering. For Physical and Skills, they must spend 12 months on one and six months on the other.
Many activities such as playing in a sports team or an instrument can be used towards DofE. Our EnrichmentProgramme also offers a range of activities that can be used towards a Duke of Edinburgh award. It is a nationwide programme that is recognised and highly respected by employers and universities alike.
The Expedition section involves planning, training and an assessed four day (three night) expedition. The school does not organise an expedition for Gold Groups. Pupils are expected as part of the Gold challenge to organise their own expedition. Pupils have until they are 25 to complete the award and many pupils complete it at university.
At Gold level, pupils will also do a Residential section – staying away from home for five days and four nights doing a shared activity with people they do not know.
