The Lower School curriculum is a varied and stimulating introduction to secondary school study.  The emphasis is on challenge and enjoyment, and a major goal is to develop effective study skills.

Lessons last 35 or 40 minutes, with double lessons for Art and Science practicals, and some triples for Engineering Technology and Games.  The school operates on a 10 day timetable.

Pupils receive up to 1 to 1½ hours of homework each weeknight – a varied diet which might include following up themes learnt in class, preparing for tests, and independent research projects.

Most lessons are taught in form groups of about 24.  In Art and Engineering Technology, forms are divided into two groups of about 12 pupils.  Year 7 pupils choose to study either Spanish or French, which is setted according to prior experience and ability. Setting in Maths and Latin is introduced in Year 8.

Pupils have timetabled lessons for PHSE (Personal, Health and Social Education) and Thinking Skills.  There is one PE lesson and two Games sessions per week.
