Department Staff

Department Overview

SmartboardInformation and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Perse is approached very much in a cross-curricular manner, with basic ICT skills taught as part of the Technology department syllabus. Most other departments have also taken on responsibilities to teach ICT skills that are most appropriate to their subject area.

We offer external ICT certification for pupils before the Sixth Form outside the normal curriculum. Sixth Form pupils without an ICT qualification are expected to follow an ICT key skills course; there is also the opportunity to study Computing at A level.

Facilities

IT PhotoMany staff make use of the three purpose-built, networked ICT rooms with a whole class to enhance the teaching of their subject. The main ICT room has 26 networked PCs, a network colour laser printer and flatbed scanner; the second ICT room has 12 networked PCs and two network printers and is used predominantly by the Sixth Form; the third room of 27 networked PCs and two printers is predominantly used by the Modern Languages department as the Language Laboratory.

There are also 26 networked PCs in the Technology rooms. In addition Geography, Music, Careers and Economics departments have small clusters of PCs for their own use each with network printers.

The Sixth Form has a study centre equipped with 18 computers and a colour laser printer.

The Science department is equipped with 24 laptops, which access the main school network via a wireless LAN. Every main teaching room in the school has a networked computer linked to a ceiling mounted projector and AV resources, a large number of these rooms also have interactive white boards.

Network

IT PhotoThe school has 12 servers which handle different areas of the network and administration and these are using Microsoft Window Server 2003. These servers enable resources to be shared efficiently; emails and Internet access to be filtered; virus protection to be updated regularly; and enable pupils to access their personal documents from any computer on the network.

All desktop PCs connected to this network use Windows XP SP2 and they all have access to the vast array of subject software as well as numerous CDs, Microsoft Office suite and Internet resources. We continue to extend the network and upgrade departmental ICT resources and are maintaining our preference for a PC platform in most areas.

Access

Sixth Form pupils are able to continue with coursework, use curriculum software or access the internet at any time during the school day. Pupils in other years can use the main IT Room to complete work, if under supervision, from 8.00am each morning or use the library at any time throughout the day.

Every pupil in the school has his or her own email address. Using this they can access the Perse Sharepoint Portal and their Outlook Inbox over the internet using Internet Explorer.

Pupils can access the internet on their own wireless device using the public wireless network which spans the whole site.
