The Department

Courses offered:

a) Latin

Latin is taken by all pupils at The Perse in years 7-8. It becomes optional in year 9. We follow the The Cambridge Latin course.

The GCSE specification is OCR 1942.
The AS specification is OCR 3818
The A2 specification is OCR 7818
The AEA examination in Latin is administered by OCR.

b) Classical Greek

Greek is optional in year 9. In 2004 we changed the course from Athenaze to Greek to GCSE (Taylor). Pupils will normally take the AS examination in year 11 by passing the GCSE stage and complete the A level course in year 12. Pupils joining the Lower Sixth Form from other schools with GCSE will be able to take the AS examination.

c) Classical Civilisation

Classical Civilisation is optional in year 9, where pupils study a course linked to Homer's Odyssey. Candidates for GCSE need to have covered five topics, which include one completed as coursework. For the written papers at present they offer Aristophanes, Livy Stories of Rome, Pompei and Herculaneum and Greek religious Festivals a) The City Dionysia b) The Olympic Games. The coursework topic is Roman Britain. To complete this candidates go to a study centre on Hadrian's Wall for three days in the summer term of year 10.

The GCSE specification is AQA 3021.
The AS specification is AQA 5021
