The Perse Upper School has a strong sporting tradition and a commitment to ‘Sport for All’ and ‘Sporting Excellence’. When girls join the school in 2010 we will build on these traditions and our record of sporting success. Furthermore, as the school’s sporting facilities continue to improve and expand, we will be able to enhance and broaden the curriculum for all.
There are significant benefits for girls’ and boys’ sport within a co-educational environment.
- Access to top facilities and coaching in specific sports regardless of gender stereotypes.
- A more varied PE curriculum enhancing all aspects of Physical Education.
- Inter school competition providing opportunities for students to challenge themselves and allowing all students to experience the benefits of playing for a school team at an appropriate level.
- The introduction of mixed gender sports such as Korfball, Mixed Tennis and Badminton.
- Increased provision for extra-curricular sports.
- Inter form sports competitions.
- A vibrant co-educational sports programme equips boys and girls with important team work and leadership skills. It helps to break down gender stereotypes and provides a greater appreciation of individual and team performances.
All sports are treated equally and help to enhance rather than detract from our main sports.
The Sports Department supports all physical activities that students participate in outside of school. In the past this has included eventing, gymnastics, orienteering, skeet shooting and swimming.
The sports programme
In order to achieve success the main sports of the term are compulsory for those students selected to play for the school. Once in Year 11 a games option is introduced where the students can independently opt to take up another sport.
